How to Turn Off Conversation View in Gmail on a Google Pixel 4A

Since Gmail is Google’s email provider, it only makes sense that it would be the default mail application on the Google Pixel 4A device.

Since it’s also a popular email service, many people won’t think twice about setting up their account in there and using it to manage, send, and receive their emails.

But even if you use Gmail on a laptop or desktop computer and have set it up to your liking, it’s possible that you will need to make adjustments to the Gmail app settings until you are comfortable using it.

One setting that you might want to change involves the way that Gmail handles emails that are all part of a conversation.

You can turn off the email conversation view on a Google Pixel 4A by opening Gmail and tapping the three lines at the top left, choosing Settings, then General settings, then turning off Email conversation view.

While conversation view is something that is offered by most popular email providers, and has been for a while, it’s not something that I have ever liked. I think I’m just too used to thinking of all of my emails as individual messages instead of one running conversation thread.

if you don’t like the current way that Gmail is handling messages that are part of a single conversation then you can continue below for more on how to change that setting.

More Information on Adjusting the Conversation View in Android 11

Many other apps have a similar setting that can be adjusted if you don’t like the conversation view. For example, on an iPhone you would change the conversation threading by going to Settings > Mail > Organize by Thread.

You can also choose whether or not to group emails by conversation threads in your Web browser in Gmail by clicking the gear icon at the top-right of the Gmail inbox, then choosing See all settings. You can then scroll down to Conversation view and choose your desired option. You will need to click Save changes at the bottom of the window when you are done.

Some of the other Gmail settings that you can change on your Pixel phone include:

  • Default email notification action
  • Conversation list density
  • Mail swipe actions
  • Auto-fit email messages
  • Auto-advanced
  • And more

Note that changes to settings that you make in the app won’t affect how Gmail behaves on your laptop or desktop computer, and vice versa.
